Most furniture purchases are made on two things: how something looks and what it costs. Neither tells you much about how long it will last. The construction details that actually predict durability — the wood species in the frame, the density of the foam, the joinery holding a drawer box together — are inside the piece, out of sight, and absent from most product listings.
This isn't incidental. Furniture retail is structured around the showroom experience and the product photograph. In that environment, a sofa with an attractive fabric and a particleboard frame competes on equal footing with one built on kiln-dried hardwood. The first will feel identical on the showroom floor. It will fail significantly faster at home.
When specifications are withheld, comparison becomes impossible. Buyers default to price as a proxy for quality. It often isn't one.
The buying guides are written to close that gap. Each one covers what the terminology actually means, which specifications matter and why, and how to tell a durable piece from a disposable one — without relying on price, brand reputation, or photography as shortcuts. The guides don't recommend specific products. They give you a framework for evaluating whatever you're looking at.

Buying from a specific retailer? Brand reviews explain how to shop each retailer or brand more intelligently — the business model, what to watch for, and where to apply extra scrutiny.
The Furniture Verdict extension will eventually apply the same framework directly to individual product pages while you browse.
